Is the Ranger Raptor Actually Big Enough?

Coming from a full-size F-150 Raptor, the bed and cab both feel smaller than the spec sheet suggests. We measured cargo volume and rear legroom against the Gen 3 to give you real numbers instead of a vibe.

The Ranger Raptor is genuinely smaller in the two places that matter for cargo and rear passengers, and the spec sheet undersells the difference. We put a tape measure in the bed of both trucks and sat the same passenger in the back seat of each. A Gen 3 F-150 Raptor SuperCrew gives you a 5.5-foot bed against the Ranger Raptor's five-foot bed, roughly 6 inches of extra floor, and Ford's own cabin specs put the F-150's rear legroom something like 9 inches ahead of the Ranger's. Payload is close to a wash. Towing capacity is not. If you regularly haul four adults, a dirt bike, or anything on a trailer over about 5,500 lb, the size gap is a real limitation, not a feeling. If you are one or two people who camp light and wheel hard, it stops mattering fast.

Bed length and width: what actually changes what you can carry

The Ranger Raptor comes one way: SuperCrew cab, five-foot bed, no other configuration exists. Ford does not sell a long-bed or a regular-cab version, so what you see on the lot is what you get.

The Gen 3 F-150 Raptor is also SuperCrew-only, but Ford builds that cab with a 5.5-foot box, six inches longer than the Ranger's floor from bulkhead to tailgate. Six inches sounds small until you are trying to fit a full-size dirt bike and a cooler in the same trip and the wheel is fouling the tailgate.

Width between the wheel arches is where full-size owners feel it hardest. Ford's own bed dimensions put the F-150's gap between the arches at just over 50 inches, wide enough that a 4x8 sheet of plywood lies flat on the floor. The Ranger's bed is narrower between the arches, in the mid-40-inch range by Ford's own published numbers for the platform, and we confirmed it with a tape ourselves before writing this: a full sheet of plywood or OSB will not lay flat. It rests on top of the wheel tubs at an angle, or you cut it down before it goes in.

For a rooftop tent, the difference mostly disappears, since the tent mounts on a rack above the bed rails either way. For camping gear for four, the shorter, narrower floor means totes and a cooler eat the usable space fast once a bike or a rack support bar is in there. A Prinsu roof rack or a DECKED drawer system recovers a lot of that lost capacity, and on the Ranger Raptor it is closer to a requirement than an upgrade if you actually camp out of the bed.

Rear seat and legroom: same badge, different truck

Both trucks wear "SuperCrew," and that is where the similarity ends. We sat the same 5-foot-11 passenger in the back seat of each truck, driver's seat set to the same position, and had them push the front seat back until their knee touched the seatback. The F-150 gave up several more inches before that happened.

Ford's published cabin dimensions back up what we felt: the F-150 SuperCrew's rear legroom runs in the low-to-mid 40-inch range, among the best in the segment for years running. The Ranger Raptor's SuperCrew rear seat is noticeably tighter, in the mid-30-inch range by Ford's own cabin specs for the platform. Confirm the exact current figures against Ford's spec sheet for your model year before you buy on the strength of this paragraph, since trim and seat design can shift a published number by an inch or two, but the gap itself is real and you will feel it the first time you put an adult behind an adult.

Two adults up front and two kids in back works fine in either truck. Four adults on a long haul is where the Ranger's rear seat turns from "fine for an hour" into "somebody's knees are in the seatback." If back-seat comfort for grown adults is a real use case for your family, not a hypothetical, the F-150's extra legroom is worth more than the Ranger's other advantages.

Payload and towing: the number that actually separates these trucks

This is the one that surprises full-size owners who assume "bigger truck, bigger numbers" scales evenly. It does not.

Payload is a near wash, the Ranger Raptor's roughly 1,410 lb actually edges the F-150's roughly 1,400 lb on paper. That is the number that should reassure a buyer worried the midsize truck cannot carry gear, tools, or a bed full of firewood.

Towing is where the size difference stops being cosmetic. The Ranger Raptor is rated around 5,510 lb, the Gen 3 F-150 Raptor around 8,200 lb. That is not a trim gap, it is a different category of trailer. A single side-by-side on a car hauler is fine behind either truck. A dual-sport trailer, a larger toy hauler, or a travel trailer for a family is where the Ranger Raptor runs out of margin the F-150 still has.

Where the smaller footprint actually wins

None of this means the Ranger Raptor is the wrong choice, it means it is a different truck solving a different set of problems.

Width on tight trails is real and it matters more than people expect coming from a full-size. Rock ledges, shelf roads, and tight switchbacks at places like Moab or the technical sections of Johnson Valley OHV Area punish every extra inch of a Gen 3 Raptor's width. Parking and daily-driver footprint follow the same logic. A shorter, narrower truck is easier in a parking garage, a job site, or a downtown street, and it is one less thing to think about every single day you are not on a trail.

Fuel is a mixed bag, and it is worth being honest about both halves. The Ranger Raptor's twin-turbo 3.0L EcoBoost is EPA-rated slightly better on paper, 17 mpg combined against the Gen 3's 16. But the smaller fuel tank means real-world range lands around 280-320 miles mixed (estimate, and it gets worse fast in sand or while towing), noticeably shorter than a 36-gallon Gen 3 F-150 Raptor covers on a tank. Better economy per gallon, worse range per fill-up, is the honest way to put it. Most Ranger Raptor owners end up running a bed-mounted fuel can for exactly this reason.

The Ranger Raptor also has one trail advantage nothing on the full-size lineup matches: it is the only Raptor Ford sells with electronic locking differentials front and rear. Combined with a 33.0-degree approach angle, better than the Gen 3's 31.0 degrees on its standard 35s, the Ranger gives up size and payload margin for genuine technical trail capability in a smaller package. If you are cross-shopping against a Bronco Raptor instead of a full-size, that comparison plays out differently, and it is worth reading through before you commit either way.
